Purple is a Fall Color

Hello, friends! Can you believe it’s already the end of October? I look out the window and all of the back yard trees are brilliant shades of orange and red. It’s lovely. A few weeks ago, when there was still some green to be seen, I treated myself to a roll of Lomochrome Purple so I could indulge in a bit of film photography with a fantasy color palette.

Lomochrome Purple is a specialty film where greens are rendered in purple, and blues are rendered in green. Theoretically, on an early October day, that results in a landscape of purple, orange, and red leaves against a green sky. It’s very unusual, but I love it. I shot a roll of this last year, you might remember, but I wanted to do it again.

I took all 36 shots in the space of about a week this time, and I stayed close to home. I took my camera to the Swamp, and I took it around my neighborhood. Not every shot was a winner, but I’ve illustrated this post with some of my favorites. I hope you like them!

So, keeping with the purple theme, my latest playlist!

Despite the name and the cover image, the idea of “purple” doesn’t feature prominently in these songs. In fact, I am fairly sure the word “purple” does not appear in a single title or lyric of the 20-odd tracks. Sometimes a playlist cover is just a playlist cover. I do it because I like it, and that’s as valid a reason as any 😀

So, in terms of what is on this playlist, it’s more of my usual. It’s a lot of the same bands you’ve heard me play before, and it’s got some of that mellow vibe that I like for Autumn.

Speaking of music I like for Autumn, I’ve now made a total of 18 fall playlists over the last 30 years, and they are all collected together in Autumn Radio. The first 100 songs are embedded in the player below, but this playlist has 379 songs and nearly 24 hours of music in it. So, if you’d like to play it as the soundtrack to an entire day, you can do that. But you have to click through to Spotify to get the whole 379 songs.

Ten years ago, I claimed that purple is a fall color, and I didn’t really mean it quite as literally as I appear to mean it now. I didn’t know about Lomochrome Purple back then, and I certainly wasn’t seeing purple grass and purple leaves in nature. I was just thinking that sometimes the shadows took on a bit of a burgundy hue, and sometimes I helped that along with a nudge in Photoshop.  It’s funny to see that idea becoming more of a reality, even if it isn’t reality at all, but a trick of the film.

It’s Monday evening here, and I’m in the home stretch of a sweater I’m knitting (Antler by Tin Can Knits). There’s leftover pumpkin bread in the kitchen and a new episode of some cozy British mystery waiting for me on Acorn TV. So, I’ll be signing off now. I hope you enjoy the music and the images! I’ll be back soon 🙂
