I am essentially a lazy sewist. I dislike commercial patterns with all of their complicated instructions and jargon that I may or may not understand, and I really dislike any pattern that involves too many pieces to cut out.

So, when I design a pattern, it is with simplicity in mind. It’s always something I would want to wear or use myself. And it’s always involving the least number of pieces and most straightforward instructions possible. In fact, these are not patterns so much as tutorials.

Polka Dot Cottage sewing tutorials walk you through the steps of drafting your own simple patterns. This results in projects based entirely on your own unique measurements. From throw pillows to the human body, there’s no such thing as “one size fits all.” So, doesn’t it make sense to make your own customized patterns for a better fit?

The vast majority of my patterns don’t require you to sew anything more complicated than a straight line. If you can do that, you’re already in great shape.
