We visited Ocean City New Jersey again, as we do, though I took fewer photos than usual. Every year it gets more difficult to find new perspectives from the same old scenery. This year, rather than fight it and dream up some new photo project for myself, I just decided not to force it.
I don’t know if I have mentioned this here before, but our trip eight years ago did a real number on my feet. I had purchased a pair of red sandals that I was so in love with, and as I had never had foot issues before, I didn’t give any thought to arch support. Big mistake. By the end of that long weekend in those completely flat sandals, I couldn’t walk more than a few feet without terrible pain. Back home, I spent a few days with my legs up, and everything was better. But ever since then, any time I try to take a walk somewhere, I have a limited time before the old pain starts to come back. And every Ocean City trip, where the walking is a significant part of it, I seem to re-injure myself. I wear good walking shoes now, and I take breaks, but I’ve managed to come home with tendonitis more than once since then.
Anyway, all of this to say, this time I was determined not to let my feet disappoint me, and I bought myself a kick scooter.
Instead of walking the half mile from our rental to the coffee shop in the morning, I scooted. And it was good. My scooter is not electric, it’s completely manual, so I still got exercise, but I put less stress on my feet. Or, maybe it’s more accurate to say that I put different stress on my feet. Scooting isn’t exactly stress-free, but the parts of me that are doing the work are generally the parts of me that don’t hurt too much, so it’s ok.
I barely took my fancy camera out while we were on the boardwalk, but one thing I wanted to do is capture the motion of the lit up Ferris wheel at night. Truthfully, I say I want to do this every year, but I don’t always feel like lugging my camera and heavy tripod down the boardwalk. And on the nights that I do feel like it, the weather often doesn’t cooperate. This time we had a nice clear night, the amusements were running, Aidan lent me his nice lightweight tripod (and carried it there for me), and I got a few images that I like. This one is my favorite.
Speaking of Aidan, he’s working on a long-term project that I’m not sure I’m supposed to tell you about. Suffice it to say, he wanted to visit a few nearby towns for this project while we were in that area of New Jersey, and I went along with him. Here’s where I took most of my SLR photos.
As you can see if you hover over the images, we visited Atlantic City, Ventnor City, Margate City, and Longport. We only stayed for a few minutes in each location, but it was still nice to see some Jersey Shore towns that are not part of our usual repertoire.
Back in Ocean City, most of my photography time was spent with my 35mm Canon EOS Rebel 2000 and a roll of specialty film by KONO! called Candy. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from that film, but from the few examples I’d seen, I knew that I wanted to take some nighttime photos, especially something with neon involved. And I knew I wanted some ocean views.
These have a real nostalgic vibe to them. I like it. I think it was well suited to Ocean City (I’ll show you where I shot the rest of the roll in another post), but I don’t think that I’ll be shooting it again. It’s kind of a one-trick pony. Everything is cyan. Cyan, aqua, green, teal – those are all favorite colors of mine. And it was fun once, but it’s probably out of my system now.
Other than that, Neil bought me a video camera (it’s like a Go-Pro) for an early birthday present before we left for the shore, and I used it in the car, on the scooter, and on my body to capture some of our little getaway. We’ve been home for a few weeks, and I still haven’t compiled all of my clips into a longer video about our trip, but I’ll post here if I ever get around to it.
Happy Summer! Neil is already asking me when we can fire up the adventure map again, so maybe you will be seeing more of me around here in the next few months 🙂
Thanks for sharing! Praying your feet continue to improve! I feel as if I’ve been to the shore (sort of). 😊
Thanks, Chloe! My feet are great as long as I don’t try to walk anywhere, LOL 😁 I’m going to try to get some physical therapy this summer and see if I can take care of this issue once and for all! Glad you liked the pictures
