Seeking balance (and crafty time)

Aidan enjoyed reading all of your comments on his post last night.  He was all set to reply to them, but it was late and I was all set for him to go the heck to bed already and sent him upstairs before he could have his say.

Oops.  Mean Mom Alert. 😉

I enjoyed letting him have a go at being a guest blogger, but despite what he may have said, his role is not going to expand beyond “guest” any time soon.  He’s got plenty of other stuff to keep him busy anyway, and unless he plans on getting all crafty, he wouldn’t fit in here particularly well all that often.

Speaking of getting all crafty, I’m sorry I haven’t been particularly prolific in that department lately.  I’ve had some ongoing in-front-of-the-tv-at-night knitting projects around, but that’s about it.  I feel like I’ve been busy, but I have little to show for it.

I’ve been wondering what, exactly, I have been doing with my time lately, and why, exactly, I’m not making much of anything.  I don’t have a satisfying answer to the first question, but I’m pretty sure the second answer can be found under the piles of creative clutter in my dining room (aka my “studio”).

So here I am again, craving balance.  Looking to have a little bit of everything in most of my days – some housework, some business, some creativity, some family time.

Last night I made a small dent in some of the housework, which should enable me to make a dent in my creative goals.  If it looks like I just shoved everything over, you’re half right.  It was a combination of putting/throwing some things away, and shoving everything else over.  Still plenty to do in this room, but at least I have a small square I can work in for a while.

I am thinking: Shawl Pins.  (And later, I’d love to work on that quilt I started making last October and never finished.)

If all goes according to plan, I’ll be back tomorrow with pretty things to show you.  And maybe a giveaway.  Would you be interested, perhaps, in a little handmade goodie from me?

  1. Of course I’m interested in giveaways of goodies 🙂

I hear you on the finding balance bit. The house is actually neat-ish right now (it needs some actual washing but stuff is first stage cleaned, hazards removed and swept type deal) but work and school and extra-curricular activity season is upon us and that generally leads to 3 exhausted crabby nuts.

Must find my cheese ball recipe for the dinner party tonight. I think it got cleaned up somewhere, sigh.

    1. Have a nice dinner party – I haven’t had a house clean enough for that in entirely too long!

  2. Interested? You bet!

I’m sitting here “working” and my toes are frozen and my sweater keeps opening and getting my chest all cold. hint hint.

    1. Hahaha! You crack me up 🙂
Maybe you ought to consider wearing a shirt under your sweater, LOL!

  3. I would love to dream about a giveaway 😉

    1. I was just poking around on your blog, and I saw the names Ewan and Liam – both of those names were on my short list for my second son! We ended up going with Eamonn, though 🙂

      1. I love Eamonn! I put that and Seamus on the table but hubby wasn’t as big of a fan lol I also wanted Declan badly, but he nixed that one straight out the gate :-/

  4. Oh, boy. This post resonates with me, Lisa. You talked about shoving things over so you could have someplace clean enough to work. And about trying to keep up with the housework, and laundry, and unspoken — groceries and cooking. Balance seems precariously close and almost as if we could reach out and touch it, if we just did such-and-such.

My public part of the house isn’t too bad. But I have to carve some cleaning time out of my work day today, because I have a new sewing buddy coming over tonight. So dishes have to be done, kitchen flat areas wiped/mopped. And knowing me, I’ll put it off until late this afternoon, because I feel work pressure. (And what am I doing right this minute? Procrastinating, of course…)

  5. […] you know that small counter space I cleaned off yesterday? Well, I filled it up with clay paraphernalia.  And I made myself a plaid cane using colors that I […]

  6. L – you’ll have to settle for the title of third meanest mommy in the world! I hold second meanest mommy status, and another mom we know holds the first title – I know that will break your heart …
Don’t forget that, while housework, outside work, and child-work all have to be done, you owe yourself an obligation, too. If your crafting constitutes your me-time, then you are equally obligated to make room for it on your plate. It’s hard to maintain balance, but remember to include yourself, too. Your children will remember you being happy when they won’t remember the floor being clean under the refrigerator!
