Clarkesworld Collaboration

Clarkesworld Magazine fabric and sewing projects at Polka Dot Cottage

Hi, there! I’m Lisa Clarke. Neil, editor of Clarkesworld Magazine is my husband. I thought it would be fun to design some custom fabric using the Clarkesworld robot, and use it in a few projects. Neil and I collaborated on the fabric, and then I designed the sewing projects.

All of these things are available for purchase below.

The Fabric

Sold through Spoonflower, Robot Overlord fabric comes in two colorways (aqua and white) and ten different types of fabric (from basic combed cotton to silk crepe de chine). Spoonflower also does wallpaper, decals, and wrapping paper, so if sewing is not your thing, you can always use our Robot Overlord to line your shelves or to wrap a special gift.

Each robot head circle measures roughly two inches in diameter.

The projects

With two yards of the aqua fabric in Kona Cotton, I had enough to make a custom-fit a-line skirt, and a library book tote. And I still have a little bit left over for another small project.

The Easy A-Line Skirt features instructions for making your own custom-fit pattern, and then using that pattern to sew an elastic-waist a-line skirt, designed specifically to fit your own particular curves. It requires roughly 1.5 yards of robot fabric.

The Library Book Tote requires only a very small piece of printed fabric (if you didn’t want to splurge for a full yard of robots, a fat quarter would be plenty here). The structure of the bag is constructed of mid-to-heavy-weight linen, and the bag is lined in linen as well. The example demonstrated is a 10″x15″ tote, but instructions are given for using your own custom measurements as well.
