TWiP: Newfound Punctuality

This Week in Pictures, Week 1, 2022

I think it has become fairly obvious to regular readers of this blog that I can’t seem to force myself to get here on time on Saturday mornings anymore. And that often I am a week (or more!) behind with these updates. So, it should come as a pleasant surprise to find this TWiP post appearing on Saturday morning, as it is meant to.

I could credit the start of a fresh new year for my newfound punctuality, but I think it’s more likely that I am simply happy with my photos this week and looking forward to sharing them. I’m not sure what that says about the quality of previous weeks’ photos, but there you have it.

The truth is, I have felt that I’m in a bit of a rut lately with the picture-taking. Quick phone snaps have been common. But this week I’ve made an effort to use the Canon wherever possible. What I lose in convenience, I more than make up for in quality, I think. It’s not that my phone doesn’t take lovely pictures. In fact, my 4-year-old Samsung phone is orders of magnitude better than the camera I was using when I started this blog. But there’s something about a DSLR photo that just feels better. It probably has something to do with the shallow depth of field that can be achieved so easily, but I think there’s probably more to it that is just difficult to pinpoint.

Whatever it is, I enjoyed playing with it this week.

So, what is This Week in Pictures?

It’s a roundup of the little (and big!) moments I have captured all week. Some of these images are posted on Instagram, but many aren’t posted anywhere but here. Some days there may be no photos, and other days there may be multiples.

Photos taken with 📷 (Canon EOS 80D) or 📱 (Samsung Galaxy S9).

New Year’s Eve leftovers for lunch 😋

Last day of my vacation, hanging out in my PJs, bookmarking recipes in my new #weekdayvegetarians cookbook by Jenny Rosenstrach @dinneralovestory 🤩
You would never know that I don’t do the cooking around here anymore, given all the pages I marked. Guess I will be spending more time in the kitchen in 2022 😁
BTW, Jenny’s “deconstructed dinner” principle was a godsend for me a decade ago, when I was trying to feed two picky young boys, and a husband with specific dietary needs, without becoming a short-order cook. Dinner: A Love Story has been hands-down my favorite food blog for years 💕

Back to work. There’s no snow, but it has still managed to look like winter today. Fairy lights and a candle seemed called for.

My hands were feeling restless, so… There’s a new ripple in town. Gray, white, yellow-greens and sky blues are the plan.

Midafternoon snack.Back in the office, the sun used to hit my desk around 9am. Here at home, at this time of year, it’s a 3pm thing.
Moments after taking the previous image, I picked up my coffee mug, knocked it into the pretzel bowl and spilled some of it all over my desk. Just keeping it real here 🙂
Tonight I’m making black bean and lentil soup. It’s the second time I’ve made my variation of this recipe, and I think it’s a keeper.

I know I’ve complained bitterly about snow in the past, but I don’t mind it so much anymore. It really is beautiful when it’s brand new, and I love what it does to the morning light in my kitchen.
Here comes the sun 🙂
