Near the end of last year I decided that Project 365 had run its course for me. I’d done that photo-a-day thing for twelve years, and while there was still something of value in it for me, I found other parts of it were just too rigid for my liking and for the way I live these days.
So, I abandoned the parts of it that were too much:
- The requirement that there be exactly one photo every single day
- The posting of the photo to a strict Project 365 Flickr group
- The distinctions I was making between a 365 photo, and an extra bonus photo I may have posted to Instagram on the same day
And I decided that these new rules would be more sustainable, and would bring me more enjoyment:
- Taking a photo every day is encouraged but not required
- Taking multiple photos on a day where multiple photogenic things are happening is also encouraged, and I don’t have to pick just one to be the photo of the day – they’re all equally as valuable
- No more Flickr
- Photos can be posted on Instagram, but it’s not required to actually post them anywhere, if I don’t feel like it
- Including a video component in the form of 1.5-second clips with 1 Second Everyday will add a fun new dimension and challenge. The same zero-or-more clips-per-day rules apply to the video as to the photos.
So, goodbye Project 365, hello, “This Week in Pictures” (I wracked my brain for weeks trying to come up with a good hashtag for this project, but it finally hit me on New Year’s Day, that I already actually have a project name with these weekly posts that I’ve been doing since 2014 😀 So, I am just using that, and hashtagging my Instagram images with #thisweekinpictures and a more specific-to-me #twiplrc2021.)
I hope that changing things up in this way will allow me to keep the things that I have liked about a daily(ish) photo project, and abandon the things that were no longer working for me. I also think that this flexibility will be more friendly to taking on month-long projects when the whim strikes. The biggest challenge is to make sure I have enough images to make a decent weekly post here. Without the daily requirement hanging over my head, will I think to pick up the camera enough? We’ll see.
And if I decide that I miss the structure of a daily project, there’s nothing stopping me from changing my mind about the whole thing and starting a new Project 365 in the middle of the year. I did it once before, and it was fine 🙂
So, what is This Week in Pictures?
It’s a roundup of the little (and big!) moments I have captured all week. Most of these images are posted on Instagram, but others aren’t posted anywhere but here. Some days there may be no photos, and other days there may be multiples. It’s more laid back than the Project 365s of previous years. You can learn more here 🙂

Highlight Reel
It might have been nice if the first full week of 2021 was uneventful and easy, but you get what you get. And what we got was a brief hospital stay for Neil and an attempted coup at the US Capitol Building. Yikes.
