Face Coverings in Designer Prints

Handmade Cotton Face Masks

I’ve mentioned this on social media, and you’ve probably seen it in my TWiP posts, but I have never actually published a proper blog post about it, until now. So here it is: I have been sewing handmade cotton face masks for the last few months, and they are for sale right here.

I didn’t intend to go into business selling masks. My first batches were mailed out to family members, and after that I started donating them to organizations around town. But once the public health agencies began recommending that everyone wear a face covering when out in public, I decided to sell them here, too.

For a while there, I was cranking out a few dozen face masks per week, even while working my Day Job. Things have slowed down lately, which is fine with me. I wouldn’t have been able to keep up that pace for much longer anyway. Now I make maybe ten a week, unless I have orders for more.

In the last month, as stores are re-opening, and some of the big chains are selling five-packs of masks for twelve dollars, demand for my handmade face coverings has begun to wane. That said, I haven’t put away my sewing machine. And I still have fabric cut out for another hundred of them at least. So, if you are in the market for a handmade double-layer cotton face mask with designer prints on the front and cozy flannel on the back, you know where to find me. I’ll happily whip up one to your specifications for $10, or just pick one for you at random for $6.

Also worth mentioning: you can contribute to my donation work. Every time I find myself with more than 20 masks in stock, I offer them as a donation to a local organization. If you would like to support this cause, you can order a mask or two that I will make and donate on your behalf. Check that out here.

I don’t know about you, but I have grown used to the way the mask feels on my face. I didn’t like it at first, but now it’s routine, and it doesn’t bother me. In fact, I have to admit I think of it as a fashion accessory these days, and try to match it to my outfit 😁 I have four masks in rotation, all bold florals, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I accumulate more as time goes on.

Where I live (New Jersey), we have successfully flattened the curve, and we are seeing fewer new cases every day. But I know that there are areas of this country where the opposite is true, and it’s still possible that we will see a second wave of cases in the fall. I don’t think the need for face coverings is going away any time soon.

Whether you get your masks from me, or you grab a cheap multi-pack from Old Navy or wherever, please wear them. In this time, when so many things are out of our control, wearing a mask is one concrete thing that we can all do to help protect our neighbors, friends, and strangers from germs we may not even know we have! 💚
