TWiP: Flora and Fauna

This Week in Pictures, Week 25, 2020

I’m becoming the neighborhood crazy lady who goes outside in her pajamas every morning to chat up the wildlife. We have a pair of woodpeckers that I have to keep chasing off of the house, a bunch of comical squirrels, so many other birds (robins, mourning doves, carolina wrens, catbirds, grackles, blue jays – and those are just the ones I can recognize!), chipmunks, a family of groundhogs living in a labyrinth under my garage, and a rabbit family that I am particularly fond of.

“Hello, bunny!” I say to one or the other of them, whenever I find them nibbling on the weeds that grow up in the cracks between our walkway pavers. They have yet to respond, but they are also not running away, and that in itself is a kind of acknowledgement of our relationship.

On Friday, I had an opportunity to spend the afternoon at a botanical garden with my sister and my mother. I’d already said no to a chance to go strawberry picking with my sister-in-law and nieces earlier in the week, and I was regretting it. I know that I am lucky to still be gainfully employed right now, but this Day Job stuff really gets in the way of Summer fun.

One thing the Day Job has going for it, though, is the flexibility to put in some Saturday hours and make up for any time off. So, I re-arranged my work hours, and spent my Friday afternoon among the flowers. It meant I had to spend my Saturday morning sitting at my desk, but it was worth it.

So, what is This Week in Pictures?

It’s a roundup of the microblogging I’ve done on Flickr and Instagram all week. This includes photos I shot for Project 365 and any other extra images I may have posted.

Photos taken with 📷 (Canon EOS 80D) or 📱 (Samsung Galaxy S9).

Ready? Cast your mind back to Saturday last week…

Saturday

Eamonn and I spent some time this morning in a part of the Great Swamp where we don’t usually go. Our favorite boardwalks are still closed for social distancing, but this made for a good change of scenery.

I love that when I am feeling stir crazy there beautiful places I can go to take pictures and a few deep breaths. I showed this to my sister, who said she thinks the bird is a #treeswallow. It probably is, because she’s usually right about these things 💙

Sunday

It’s not a weekend without tuna on an everything bagel. And it’s especially nice when I have farmers market pickles to put inside the sandwich.

We have a bunny family in the neighborhood. Before I went to get my camera, Mama and Baby were hanging out on the walkway together. I don’t know where Baby snuck off to, though.

Hot on the heels of Peony Season, we have Lily Liftoff.

A heatwave is starting, and our A/C is no longer working. My sister-in-law gave us this window fan she was getting rid of, and so far it’s doing the trick nicely. (Ask me what I think next week when the temperatures hover around 90 all week 😬)

Friday

Ok, fine. I will put off this afternoon’s work until tomorrow, and I will drive an hour north and take pictures of flowers. Twist. My. Arm.

We almost didn’t see this little guy hiding in plain sight.
