TWiP: Sew Busy

It’s been a stitchy week. I’ve been essentially living and breathing mask-making. I’m getting enjoyment out of the whole process, from the pawing through my stash for the perfect fabrics, to sewing them, packing them, and dropping them in the mailbox (or the pickup box on my front steps for the locals).

It’s been a long time since I’ve been so interested in using my sewing machine, and I hope it continues. I started out this mask-making thing by mailing them out to members of my family, and then donating a few dozen to local organizations. And then I made a few dozen more to donate. And then I thought, “maybe there are people who might like to buy one,” so I put them in the shop.

I have now discovered that there are, indeed, people who might like to buy one, and I’ve been sewing during every lunch break, evening, and weekend ever since. I will continue to donate masks locally, and fill orders from the Polka Dot Cottage Shop, for as long as it’s sustainable for me to do so.

Strangely enough, there’s not a lot of this activity reflected in my images this time. Blame Picture Home and my day job 😀

On a related note, I knew I had a lot of fabric, but I had no idea I had SO MUCH! I have either sewed or cut out the fabric for nearly 300 masks at this point, and I only just now am running out of backing flannel, and seeing the end of my spool of elastic. I still have plenty of quilting cottons to use for the front, though. I could completely get away with not buying any more fabric for some time. Though I have to admit, I splurged this weekend and got myself some 10-inch squares from Anna Maria Horner’s Hindsight collection, and some cute mint green polka dot flannel to go with it. Once it arrives, I will sew up a bunch of masks that are going to be so pretty, I will probably have trouble letting go of them 😜

So, what is This Week in Pictures?

It’s a roundup of the microblogging I’ve done on Flickr and Instagram all week. This includes photos I shot for Project 365 and any other extra images I may have posted.

Photos taken with 📷 (Canon EOS 80D) or 📱 (Samsung Galaxy S9).

Ready? Cast your mind back to Saturday last week…

Saturday

Day 1/31: Homecoming
When I pull off of the main road and approach my neighborhood 💙💚 (I’m a day late getting started, but it’s all good. This is for #pspicturehome, a #pictureseries thing to do this month with @traceyclark 🏡😷📷)

Sometimes you just have to get out of the car and point your camera at something pretty.

Day 2/31: Time Well Spent
I lost my sewing mojo for a good long while there, but when I pulled the machine out of storage to make a few dozen face masks for a donation, slowly I felt my enthusiasm beginning to return. At this point, I’m approaching 200 masks made, most of them donated locally, and I’m still enjoying the work. I’ve sewn so many more of these than I ever intended, but I plan to keep going until my supplies or my enthusiasm run out – whichever comes first 😁

Day 3/31: Where the Sidewalk Ends
Pajamas and coffee on the front walk at 3 in the afternoon. Having nowhere to go and nobody to see has its perks.

Monday

Day 4/31: Behind the Curtain
It’s Monday, which means back to work, but it’s also a beautiful day, so it means open window. I enjoy working from home. In the office, there are no open windows, and no gentle breeze across my keyboard. But at home? Plenty of both.

Day 6/31: Word Search
While life hasn’t come to a complete standstill these days, it has slowed down considerably.

Robins really seem to love my yard. They’re everywhere.

Thursday

I found a handy way to set up my phone in the kitchen, in case I want to chat with actual humans while I make my coffee sometime.

I’m feeling very green today 💚

Day 7/31: The Long Hall
On a good day, the contents of three bedrooms and a bathroom spill over into the hallway just a bit. But lately, we’ve also got 7 or 8 big black bags of clothes and things that are on their way to be donated. Eventually.

Friday

I hung our masks by the front door. One hook for each of us.

Day 8/31: Stir Crazy
When I asked for help with this prompt, he took out his book of Japanese proverbs, and the whole thing was funny enough that we didn’t even use one of them.
