HELP! I don’t know what books to bring to the beach!

Our annual Ocean City weekend getaway is approaching (yay!) and it usually kicks off “reading season” for me. Most times of the year, my reading consists of craft books full of projects and lush photography, but it’s different in the summer.

In the summer I like to read books with actual words and true stories. Typically that has been in the form of food memoirs and year-of-doing-something-unusual memoirs, although last year I branched out into female entertainers.

Previously in Ocean City, I’ve read and enjoyed Molly Wizenberg’s two books (A Homemade Life and Delancey), Barbara Kingsolver’s Animal Vegetable Miracle, two of Gretchen Rubin’s books (The Happiness Project, and Happier at Home), and memoirs from Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Rachel Dratch.

There are others, but I can’t remember offhand now.

So what do you think? Any ideas what I should read next? Basically, if it’s like a slice-of-life blog in book form, I will probably like it 🙂

I look forward to your suggestions!

  1. I usually like to suggest books, but I think we have completely opposite tastes! My request is usually “if it involves the plague, or something like a plague, I’ll probably like it.”

    1. Isn’t it funny that our musical tastes can overlap a lot, but our literary tastes don’t at all?

      1. Coincidentally, I was just listening to one of my playlists that has a lot of music I got from you on it.

    2. Hmm, yes, plague books might be too dark for the beach 😀
What about autobiographies by women? You must know some interesting reads in that department. All the better if there’s a sense of humor involved.

      1. I do read a lot of memoirs, but even those are pretty dark–Brain on Fire, for example (at least that one, you know she survives okay in the end, or she couldn’t have written the book).

  2. If you like self-deprecating, sarcastic, funny reads, check out Jen Lancaster! A little crude language, but entertaining 🙂

    1. Ok, I think maybe I’m sold. I have to see if they have any of her memoirs at my local library. I’m particularly drawn to The Tao of Martha, but probably any of them will entertain me. Thanks!

    2. I reserved The Tao of Martha at my library. Thanks for the suggestion!

  3. I just finished The Death of the Heart by Elizabeth Bowen and before that I read Someone by Alice McDermott which was very sweet…neither were funny though…and I definitely want to read Bossypants soon…

    ~Have a lovely day!

    1. I think I want to stick with lighthearted entertainment for this particular weekend, but thanks for the suggestions!

I loved Bossypants, but then I pretty much love anything Tina Fey does.
