Three Little Porthole Cardigans

Continuing last week’s theme of show-and-telling stuff I made in 2015, allow me to present these little sweaters:

Porthole Cardigans

I improvised this pattern and then made these three little samples: one for my 3-year-old niece, one for my 6-month-old niece, and one for the 3-year-old’s Bitty Baby doll.

I am calling this the “Porthole Cardigan” because the color pattern in the yoke reminds me of rows of little windows on a cruise ship.

In keeping with the theme of other recent knitterly shows-and-tells, I don’t have pictures of the girls (or the doll) wearing these. I’m not even sure they fit them, but I’m hoping. At the very least, the girls will grow into them. Not so much the doll, but maybe Bitty likes her clothes baggy 🙂

I made the buttons, too, mixing some custom clay colors to match the pink and the white.

The plan was to write up the pattern and put it in my shop, after all, I should have the process down cold after knitting three of them, right? You’d think so, but in reality, so much time passed between knitting the first one (the pink one, finished in September) and the last one (the tiny white one, hastily completed in a mad rush two days before Christmas) that I felt like I had to re-learn what I was doing each time, and some of the notes I scribbled down no longer make sense to me.

I don’t know. I do want to publish it, and I’d like to make a grown-up version, too, but I think I may have had enough of this pattern for the next little while. I’ll try to come back to it soon!

UPDATE: Come back to it, I have! And the pattern is now available. I hope you love it!

  1. Your post made me think of fair isle patterns. Give me shout out if u ever need a tester…

    1. I’m still afraid of fair isle 🙂 This is much simpler. I’ll let you know if I need a tester!

      1. I conquered my fear of fair isle by knitting a knitted and braided ball. Let me know if u ever want the pattern.

        1. Thanks, I will!

  2. […] is a Porthole Cardigan in progress, a baby sweater of my own design. I’ve knit three of these before, but I never got around to publishing the pattern as intended. And then I lost my notes and […]
