Weekend Favorites

I’m sitting here, flashing back to 8th grade, thanks to the wonders of technology. Pandora sent me a phone notification to let me know about a genre station they thought I might like. They called it Spring Break 1985.

In 1985 I wasn’t exactly doing the “Spring Break” thing. I was a Catholic school kid, I got an “Easter break” as it was called, and I’m sure it was pretty low-key. It certainly wasn’t remarkable enough for me to recall what I was doing.

But I do remember 1985 in general, and if my Easter break was anything like the rest of the mid-80’s was for me, I was pulling my socks up to my knees, riding my bike to the library, and listening to the radio with a daydreamy sappiness typical of 14-year-old girls.

This Pandora station is really capturing that year (and a few subsequent years) for me. I’ve forgotten about so many of these songs, and yet I still know all of the words. Crazy. Check it out, if you like.

Links

Here are a few interesting things from around the web that grabbed me this week:

  • How to make a recycled plastic bottle footstool – an idea from Recycled Crafts. There is not really a full-blown tutorial here, but the pictures tell the story. And if you want to knit/crochet/sew your own cover, there are plenty of tutorials out there that can guide you. Neat idea, though, don’t you think?
  • DIY ROPE BOWL – a photo tutorial from Gemma Patford, via a pair & a spare. These bowls are so nifty, and from the looks of this, not all that hard to make yourself.
  • how to take a self portrait with your dslr – tips from beth a-dilly. No more hiding behind the camera, ladies. Here, Beth gives some tips for how to photograph yourself and still have everything you want in focus to be in focus.
  • Craftier than Cancer – an auction by Elvis in the Attic, via 32auctions. One of my college friends has put together this online auction of handmade items to help her Relay for Life team (Elvis in the Attic) meet its fundraising goal. She says, “We do this in memory of too many lost to cancer and in support of those still fighting.” Check it out and pick up a nice pair of beaded earrings or a cozy lap quilt!
  • who? – a knitting pattern from penguin purls. This owl hat is adorable! It’s a free pattern for infants, children, and adults. I am adding that to my Ravelry queue right now.

Have a great day 🙂

But if anywhere is going to have some moisture and vibrancy during a drought, a swamp is. After work, I went to a part of the Great Swamp that I don't usually visit. I was looking for some big pink flowers to focus on and zoom into, and while I did find them, I liked this wide angle view better. Well, that's a relief. It's not all crochet blankets in neutral colors this week. This week we had the pool! The beach! A new cast-on in brightly-colored yarn! And a tiny plaid sewing project. Good times.
