Itty bitty booties and such

I have been kinda laid up since Wednesday. I had a little mishap while grilling up some chicken to take to the beach with us – I stepped on an errant hot coal and burned my foot. So, um, OUCH! A big blister developed on the arch of my foot, which meant no walking, no beach, no driving, no fun. (boo hoo)

The pain went away after the first day, but the blister is still there, and I still can’t walk normally. I feel a little silly being confined to the couch when there is nothing really wrong with me aside from a 1-inch spot on my foot, but it is what it is.

I took Neil’s suggestion yesterday and cut a big hole in the middle of one of my flip-flops so that I can walk (carefully) and the blister won’t touch the ground. That’s been an improvement to what I was doing before – hobbling around on my tippie toes – but I will be happier when the blister is gone and I no longer have to baby myself.

Speaking of babies, though, while I’ve been stuck on the couch, I’ve taken advantage of the copious amounts of free stitching time and started a few projects for my new niece-to-be.  Baby-related projects are so satisfying in their instant-gratification-ness, aren’t they? Neil and Aidan picked up a copy of Linda Permann‘s Little Crochet for me at the library on Friday and I went right to the Star Booties.

Aren’t they adorable? They were pretty easy, too. I wonder, though, are they too small? They look rather tiny for a human baby. I did the 0-3 month size, but I am considering re-doing them in the larger size, or using a larger hook.  I have a tendency to crochet tightly, I think.

When I was done with that, I made a couple of motifs from the applique project. When I am comfortable driving once again, I will probably go shopping for a nice, soft solid white cotton newborn dress to sew the flowers onto, and give the booties and dress as a set.

Last night I started knitting an In Threes sweater in some pale aqua bamboo wool blend I had in my stash, and the color is so pretty next to the booties, I may make it a three piece gift.

I will, of course, show you the whole thing when it’s done!

The photo at the top of the page shows some of the other things I stitched this weekend. I’ll tell you more about those tomorrow.

  1. I think they look fine for a newborn! Just imagine holding a very young baby’s foot in your hand. It certainly wouldn’t be wider than your palm. You did a great job on them. I love that book and have made these booties, myself. You’re right, they’re nice and easy.
The bib is also super-easy to make and works up nicely in a cotton yarn like Peaches N Cream!

    1. You may be right. They’re so easy to make, though, I may just give them two pairs in two different sizes. Couldn’t hurt. Thanks for chiming in!

  2. You were grilling with bare feet? I mean, sorry that happened to you, but you might want to put shoes on in the future.

    1. Yes, Mom. (Heh. Seriously, that’s pretty much what my mother said, although I believe it was preceded with the words, “I’ve been telling you for 40 years…”) 🙂 I suppose it wouldn’t kill me to at least reach for the flip-flops now and then.

      1. I got the same reaction from my mother when I stepped on a bee! Hope your foot heals quickly!

        1. I think it’s a mother’s job. Not to mention, she was right 🙂

  3. You make me want to try everything! I just bought the baby sweater pattern. SO cute and easy. We have a new grandgirl coming this winter and I think I’ll make one for her and one for her big sister (almost 3). And I want that book so I can make the booties! I’m such a copy cat! I’m currently knitting the Mitered Crosses blanket (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mitered-crosses-blanket–for-japan) but without the log cabin borders. I haven’t quite figured out how I’ll put these squares together but they are so fun to knit (like popcorn, you can knit just one! and they go really quickly).
    Love seeing all this. Thanks.

    1. Congrats on your new grandbaby! And I am a big copycat myself 🙂 Any time I want to make something new, the first place I check is my Ravelry contacts to see if anyone I know has made something I like. It’s how I found that sweater, actually! I only have about 3 inches to go before I finish it. It’s such a quick knit – and I’m not exactly speedy.

  4. […] nicer than a new crafty book when you’re spending time stuck on the couch? Not much, I’d say. Especially when you only have to reach into the yarn basket next to you […]

  5. Bless your heart! Have meant to communicate well wshes for your husband’s speedy recovery for awhile. Your summer has been something! Ours has been a summer of breakdowns, blown engine, major washer repair, outside water line, my coffee maker & this weekend the air conditioner. Thank goodness for AAA and various other warranty plans! We are grateful and remind ourselves that they are only things. I too enjoy seeing what you are up to and admire your sense of humor through it all!

    1. Thanks, Robin! He’s doing well, back at work full-time, and getting ready to (finally) start cardiac rehab. It sounds like you’ve been through the ringer yourself these last few months. I hope things stop breaking on you!

  6. […] the itty bitty booties I made back in September? I’ve been staring at them for two months, hemming and hawing over […]
