Over-booked

I have three crochet projects going at the moment, and if I know me (and I think, by now, I do) this does not bode well for at least one of the projects.

There’s the Granny Square Sampler, which I do really love and am committed to finishing.

There’s a companion for Harold, which currently has one eye, two arms, and the top of his head completed (and may very well be the project that wins the prize of spending eternity in the bottom of a knitting bag in the basement – so sorry, potential friend of Harold).

And then there’s this:

“This” is the first few rows of a lacey shawl, that I’m planning to wear to my sister-in-law’s August wedding. This is a project that I had all but decided I wasn’t going to try to attempt in my limited pre-wedding time, until a fuzzy navel infused evening perusing wraps on Ravelry where I completely lost my mind and declared, “Let’s DO this thing!”

So, here I am, one downloadable pattern and one cone of merino/tencel blend later, hoping I was not completely insane when I committed to this.

I should admit here, that I was really more conscientious about this decision than it sounds. I did my due diligence. I looked at Ravelry projects associated with the pattern I chose, and they were all so beautiful [hard to screw up? check].  Many of the crocheters had only taken a week to complete the pattern [quicker than it looks? check]. I could get all of the yarn I needed for under $25 [not too pricey? check].

With all of that in its favor, how could I not give it a whirl?

I’m not under any illusions that I can complete this in a week, but I figure it’s not unreasonable to think I could do it in six weeks. Which is roughly what I have. Additionally, I could stop crocheting right now, add a border, and be done. Sure, it wouldn’t fit anything bigger than a Barbie doll, but that’s not really the point. The point is flexibility. If it gets to be a week before the wedding and I am still not finished, I can stop wherever I am, and just edge it. It may be smaller than I initially planned, but it will still look nice.

I never go to weddings. The last one I went to was my brother-in-law’s in 2006! So, I’m getting kind of giddy to dress myself up.

Hope I remember how 😉

(This is the dress I bought, but it’s subject to change if something else grabs me in the meantime…)

  1. The shawl will be lovely – and you’re right, it could be any project depending on where you finish it. However, I think you need to wear it to the wedding since it looks dainty and girly.

The dress is great, I’d totally get the same one. Which may or may not be a bonus but probably a comment on similar tastes.

    1. It’s always nice to have my taste validated 🙂
Dainty and Girly is what I am going for (which is remarkable, since I rarely go for that). I even ordered some sparkly freshwater pearl and cubic zirconia jewelry on Overstocks.com this week, too. I am hardly going to recognize myself, LOL!

  2. Yowza. Not to put any pressure on you, but I think you must finish this for the wedding. Easy for me to say, I know, but it’s just too pretty to stop. Blame the fuzzy navel. Take care, Byrd.

    1. Yes, it is easy for you to say, but I do happen to agree with you! 🙂 I’m making it a goal to do at least two rows per night. The one in the sample has about 40 rows, so as long as I meet (or exceed) that goal, I should be in good shape!

  3. Sometimes having a deadline is really all it takes to finish something. I have so many whenever projects sitting around but I decided to do a pair of mittens to enter in the fair in mid-August and they are booking right along.

    1. True! I often need a deadline to get force me to get my needles clicking. Or hook hooking, as the case may be 🙂

  4. I’ll bet you look great in the dress. Pictures?

    1. Nah, not yet. I’ll probably take a few after the shawl is done, though. And there will definitely be a bunch taken during the wedding, one or more of which will probably find their sneaky way onto the blog at some point!

  5. I think you can make it-crocheting is ever so much faster than knitting. One time on a week-long visit to my dad, my step mom whipped up a shawl for me-and she was a slow crocheter. You’ll do great!

    1. I’m already about twice as far as that image shows, so it looks like you are probably right. (And with that, I’m turning off the laptop, and getting out my crochet hook!)

  6. Not to worry–you’ll do fine! and the dress you chose should be beautiful on you!

    1. Thank you! I really do love the dress, and I’ve made significant progress on the shawl already (whew!).
