Sassymetrical, but not really

I finally got back to a project I’d started back in October or so: my second Sassymetrical.  Sort of.  I made my first, much in the spirit of the original pattern (i.e. same general shape) but with some modifications to deal with the different gauge of my yarn and the different curves of my body.  I liked it, but after wearing it a few times, I kept finding myself thinking things like:

  • too bad this thing doesn’t have long sleeves
  • I like mustard, but a nice charcoal gray would be more versatile
  • a sweater like this might be nice in a more traditional cardigan shape

I let those thoughts bounce around a little while, and then I bought myself a few balls of dark gray yarn, scribbled a couple of calculations, and cast on.

So, while it’s based on Sassymetrical, and has the same seed stitch trim, the sleeves are long not short, the sweater is hip-length not waist-length, and the side panels are about three inches narrower and meet where the buttons would be, if there were buttons.

I hold it together with the stick part of a shawl pin – I thought the shawl pin itself would be too large and overwhelming.  I’m feeling like “subtle” is the way to go with this one.

I love the way it came out, which is saying a lot, since I completely winged-it 😀

The only thing I’d change is I would have knit the sleeves about an inch longer.  I might be able to fix that with blocking, though…

Pattern: Sassymetrical by Gay Schiff – a cropped cardigan that can be worn asymmetrically.

Yarn: Berroco Remix in Pitch, 4 balls plus a little bit of a fifth. Or is it 3 balls plus a little bit of a fourth?  I’m afraid I don’t remember now.

Modifications: You can see my original sweater to see the modifications I made to Gay’s pattern.  For this one, I started from that point and cast on fewer stitches for the front panels (unfortunately I didn’t take notes, so I can’t be more specific here, but I basically just narrowed the panels by a few inches).  I continued to knit until the sweater reached my hip.  For the sleeves, I continued to knit to the elbow, and then continued to the wrist, periodically decreasing a few stitches here and there.
