Upcycled Bag o’ Yarn

You may remember last year, when I bought the book  2-at-a-Time Socks and taught myself the method.  I actually still haven’t made a pair of socks.  I just wanted to know how to make two of anything at once, because goodness knows if I hadn’t, there would be an awful lot of mate-less wrist warmers around here.  The second identical one in a pair bores me terribly.

So I’ve been using this 2-at-a-time method for fingerless gloves and sweater sleeves, and basically anything that comes in twos, and I’ve been keeping the balls of yarn from tangling with each other by sticking them in a ziplock bag and pulling one strand out of each side of the half-zipped top.  Classy and elegant, I know.  It’s been bugging me lately, so I shoved the clutter off of one end of my craft table and whipped up this little bag.

Essentially, it’s a simple bag with a flap that goes almost all the way across, leaving a hole at each end – one for each strand of working yarn.

I used the original quart-size ziplock bag to determine how big to cut the fabric, and cut two pieces for the main bag.  I eyeballed the size of the flap.  A big button and a hair elastic serve as the closure.

Attaching the flap gave me a little difficulty – I am spatially-challenged today, apparently – and so some of the sewing there is kind of messy.  I may fix it, I may not.  Right now, I’m just happy to be using something other than a ziplock!

The fabric, by the way, is a nice heavy home decor weight fabric that used to be a pair of curtains I picked up at the thrift shop.  Plenty more of it left, too.  Gotta love upcycling!

  1. Brilliant!

  2. Wow, so simple, yet brilliant! I gave up magic loop because it was too much trouble keeping the yarns separate! Great idea. I’m going to my sewing machine now. I’m gonna sew a bag but make two channels to keep them separate for sure!

  3. This bag is a great idea. Have mentally put making one this afternoon on my ‘to do’ list. Wheeeee! No more tangled yarn when knitting with two balls of yarn. Thanks.

  4. Genius! I love it.

  5. another great idea!

  6. […] you for your nice comments on my yarn bag this week.  I’m sorry I haven’t had the time to respond individually – […]

  7. totally smart! love the idea of the holes to keep them exiting correctly.
