Charmed

Ah, the “charm pack.”  A package of 40-some-odd five-inch squares of fabric, samples of each print in a given fabric collection (in this case  “Punctuation” by Sandy Klop/American Jane).

Most people use them in quilt tops, but me? I like to spend an hour sorting them by color.  And then by pattern.  And then in pseudo-random arrangements on the floor.  And then again, just for kicks.

Perhaps I am easily entertained, but I need never get out my sewing machine to get my $10’s-worth of enjoyment out of a charm pack.

  1. When I buy new blocks of scrapbook paper I do this too… and really, I don’t use scrapbook paper for much apart from staring at.

We are trading some computer repairs for a sewing machine this fall so I imagine I will be doing a little bit of playing with samples soon, too.

    1. Ooh, fun 🙂 I think charm packs are dangerous, because they are inexpensive enough to impulse-buy now and then!

  2. Thanks for saying out loud what is so true for me too, a lot, which is that most of the fun I have with fabric is had before it ever touches the sewing machine. I never thought about it before, much less celebrated it. Thanks for sharing your fabric with us!

    1. My pleasure 🙂 If only my knees and my back liked hanging out on the floor more often, I’d do a lot more of this kind of thing!

  3. Thanks for introducing me to the wonder of the Charm Pack … now I want to go find more of these & add them to my collection … so I too can spend hours sorting and playing.

    1. Heh. They’re addicting. And so easy to just drop into your shopping cart on a whim, when you’re buying something else that you actually need. Not that I’ve done that or anything… 😉

  4. Hi, I know this is an old post but just had to say I enjoyed it! I love charm packs too, they are all the range which normally I can’t afford bigger bits of and I sort and sort happily, then make cushions, trim aprons, and match them with other fabrics I own already. They are delightful. I am making a tablecloth with Dream On charms, a bit of Botany and Nicey Jane, in mainly yellow and green for summer. Well that was almost a letter! Thanks.

    1. That sounds nice! I’m considering a small quilt for my new nephew out of the pack I posted about here, but I haven’t decided yet. I think it would be cute with some natural linen squares mixed in, and a simple print on the back.

  5. I think that would be georgeous, natural linen would be beautiful with that charm pack.

  6. […] that American Jane “Punctuation” charm pack I was playing with a few months ago?  I’d had it in my mind then that it would make a nice crib/floor quilt for my new nephew.  […]
