Baking, Feasting, and Re-Thinking

Baking

Before I forget again, let me get this out of the way:

If you are a Facebook user, and a fan of Polka Dot Creations, Polka Dot Radio, or both, you can visit their pages there and declare yourself to be a fan:

Oh, and feel free to befriend me, too, if you haven’t already.

Whew. Glad that’s done. I’ve been forgetting to do that for the last few posts icon_wink-flickr

I’ve been baking…

Baking

The little people and I cracked open a gingerbread cookie mix, made ourselves a dough and put some long-neglected cookie cutters to good use.

The resulting cookies were good enough that we never got a chance to decorate them. I’m glad I took this picture when I did, in fact, because now there’s a meager selection in the basket and they look kind of sad.

We also made Mom’s Cranberry Bread. It’s only just come out of the oven, so we haven’t taste-tested it yet. Maybe tonight after we get back from our Thanksgiving feast with Neil’s parents, he and I can sit down with a beverage and a hunk of bread. (Why get a knife dirty when you’ve got perfectly good fingers and nobody to impress with your table manners?)

No, the cranberry bread is not destined to come with us for Thanksgiving.  In the past, I’ve brought cranberry-ish, pumpkin-ey, thanksgiving-like fare with me to the Irish in-laws’ celebration and I’ve been the only one to eat it.  While they may not be big on Cranberry Relish or Pumpkin Trifle, Apple Pie has always been a consistent hit.  Since I’m all about sticking with what works, this culinary delight is in my oven as we speak:

Hey, Mrs. Smith has pie making down way better than I ever will – why reinvent the wheel?

Thanksgiving. I looked forward to this holiday every year during my childhood, but in my adulthood it has lacked some of the magic. It seems I’ve tried every year to recapture it in some way, and have always fallen short and felt let down. This year I’m trying something different – I’m going into this day with no expectations whatsoever. It is what it is, and it will go as it will go. I’ll bring my apple pie with me, help out in the kitchen when I can, and enjoy the company. How can I go wrong with that?

That’s what my thankful thing for today will be – a new perspective.  I’m looking forward to it!

Have a wonderful day!

  1. I love that hand cookie with the heart cut-out–adorable!

You made me chuckle with your apple pie–so true, so true.

Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving!

    1. The pie was delicious as always 😉 It was a nice day – I hope your non-traditional feast went well! I’m so behind in my blog-reading, I only just read last night where you said you were going out to eat. I haven’t caught up enough to see how that went, LOL!

  2. Hope you had a wonderful day!
I totally know what you mean on the day losing it’s “magic” LOL I’m trying to get back in the grove of it though! I was just so tired standing in the kitchen all day and really wasn’t feeling up to it..

    1. I can imagine that being the hostess must be very difficult! I’ve managed to avoid that every year. Of course, by doing that I’ve given up all of the control and have to accept that the holiday is going to be what they make it more than what I make it. I guess it’s a trade-off!

  3. My inlaws don’t seem to appreciate anything outside of the norm when it comes to foods and desserts. It only took me 5+ years to finally learn that lesson. So how was the cranberry bread?

    1. It was really good! I am going to make more, but this time I’ll make it in smaller loaves (or maybe muffins) and freeze some because nobody else in this house is as interested in it as I am. I had to throw out half of this loaf because I couldn’t finish it in time. Thanks for dropping by!

  4. […] I sample things like high school football games, ecumenical prayer services, and baking breads.  Last year, I gave up entirely on the tradition idea, and just decided to sit back and enjoy the day.  I have […]
