They boys had requested a weekend at a hotel. We couldn’t swing that, so we asked them to make a list of their favorite memories from previous hotel visits and worked at checking them off.
Hot chocolate. Check.
Staying up late on Saturday night to play games. Check.
And check.
Finding a shore town to do a little shopping for jellybeans and other trinkets. Check.
Walking on a boardwalk. Check.
Unexpectedly getting to play on the beach. Check.
And getting to see things we don’t see every day. Check.
Check.
And Check.
I think we did pretty well. And I suspect the happy boys, who are upstairs giggling in their beds when they should be sleeping, would agree.

It’s also kind of interesting to find out what, exactly, they think of as happy vacation memories. I never would have realized that buying jellybeans at a candy store in Ocean City last April was a highlight of that trip, but apparently it was a big deal!
The whale shot was a WOW. If it was a minke, even more so, those puppies are elusive. It’s too late in the season to be a finback, unless you live seriously south.

Actually, it was a dolphin – a pod of them was traveling south. I’d never seen a dolphin in the “wild” before, so this was pretty amazing to me. I even caught a glimpse of two of them jumping out of the water and cris-crossing with each other in midair. I wish we’d gotten that on camera!

wow…I am loving all the ocean shots. Growing up around salt air and water and now living in a “high desert” area…I really miss ocean shots. Thank you for bringing a smile to my face this morning. I totally love the seagull one. Of course the boys on the beach are great.

I wasn’t born into a family of beach people at all, but some of my fondest adult memories have centered around being at a beach in the off season. Glad you enjoyed the photos – we had a nice time.

It was fun! And I love going places where there are hardly any people around – it makes it a *lot* easier to keep an eye on little people. Especially fearless four-year-olds…
The empty beach in off-season is one of the things we love down here. I should go check for dolphins. They are actually around a fair amount when the water gets cooler around mid-October or so.
It’s great that you figure out these fun things to do. I’m glad I did a few of these with my kids before the oldest signed up for marching band. Maaaaarrrrchhhhhiiiiing Baaaaaaannnnnd! (that’s the band mom zombie, for Halloween!)
I’m glad I think of these things now and then, too – it helps make up for the “single-parenting while in the throes of PMS” weekends like I’m having right now 😉
