Most of my patterns start with three somewhat dark base colors and a fourth color which is used to lighten and brighten the other three. This fourth color is usually White, but I sometimes also use Tan, Yellow or Gray for other interesting effects. The finished product is called a "cane" and can be compared to a roll of slice-and-bake cookie dough where the pattern is visible in any cross-section.
COSMOS is a variation on a variation of mokume gane. Mokume is traditionally a pattern worked in metal, but the idea has been adapted to polymer clay. I, in turn, have taken one of the many polymer variations and adapted it for use in canework. The swirling designs are significantly different with each slice, and as such, no two pieces made with this pattern are every really the same. Do you see the sparkling little bits of metal leaf peeking out from among the clay?
I was inspired in this direction during a class with Julie Picarello. You can read more about that here.
This pattern was first developed in 2009
