Polka Dot Cottage: Don’t hate me because I’m prolific

Don’t hate me because I’m prolific

Posted April 28th, 2008 by Lisa

Remember those “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful” ads? I remembered the phrase, but couldn’t for the life of me remember the product. (It was Pantene. Gotta love google.) It amuses me that advertisements can be so effective at getting into your brain that you’ll remember their taglines twenty years after the fact, but at the same time can be completely ineffective at getting you to remember which items they’re hawking.

Well, anyway, back to me being prolific…

New skirt

I made another skirt. Another Sew What Skirts wrap, this time from the sheet I bought on Saturday. I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about this sheet, to be honest, but I bought it anyway because I needed to have something to swap. Now I’m glad I grabbed it – I really love it!

New skirt

I think the subtle pattern is perfect for those days when I don’t want to wear anything too “loud.” I mean, let’s face it: most of my skirts are on the busy side. It was $2.50 well spent, I’d say. And I still have two pieces left to swap with, and another smaller chunk for my stash. I sense a new addiction. Thankfully the thrifted sheet addiction is a lot less pricey than the designer quilting cottons addiction (which, I’m happy to report, I’m doing very well at curbing right now).

To be swapped

So we’ve got fifty swappers signed up (not including me), and I spent some time yesterday trying to decide how to handle this so that I don’t make myself completely crazy. I had been keeping a spreadsheet of participants, and now I added to that a second spreadsheet to keep track of the sheets themselves. I then made a set of mail-merge labels from the spreadsheets so that I can mark each piece and know where it came from as well as where it’s going. I don’t want to accidentally send someone their own sheet back, and now with my nerdy little system, it shouldn’t be a problem. Sometimes it pays to be a geek :-D

One Object 365 Days: 119/365 04/28/08

I was supposed to be getting a tour of a local Shop Rite with a bunch of 4-and-5 year olds today, but my sweet child sent me home, LOL!

Actually, what really happened was that they had enough volunteer drivers that they didn’t need me, and I never got last week’s memo that said as much. Eamonn forgot to bring it home. I figured the little cherub would still want me to come, so I asked him, “Do you want to go on the class trip with me, or do you want to go with Kevin’s mom?” He looked at me and said shyly, “well, Mom, Kevin is my best friend…” Say no more, kiddo. I made absolutely sure he was ok going without me, and then I left, suddenly having 2 extra hours this morning that I wasn’t expecting to have. I felt a little weird driving back home, all decked-out in my rain gear and happy fun shoes.

I think this is the first time one of my kids has rejected me in favor of a peer. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened sooner, really, but it still took me off-guard. I actually sat in the parking lot for five minutes just in case anyone came running out of the building calling, “Wait! Wait! he changed his mind!” I guess it goes without saying that nobody did ;-)

. . . What really kills me is that you manage to do all of this with children. What, then, is my excuse for my growing pile of skirt fabric??

You are so organized I’m glad I’m not the only one is gets called an “overachiever” although with softball season in full throttle I may not be called that anytime soon. I did make my first skirt last night and love it. But when I woke up this morning it was pouring and only 50ish so I will have to wait a few days for the nice weather to return so I can wear it and post a pic. Hubby even liked it and wanted to know where I bought it, he got a kick out of it when I told him it was from a sheet.hehehe. Oh yea I mailed my sheets today so you should have them in 2-4 days.

Oh, don’t you hate that? You make something fun and springy to wear, and the weather gets all cold and wet on you. It was like that around here today, too. I spent my day in sweatpants instead of either of my nifty new skirts.

Looking forward to seeing the sheets!

OH!!! I am so sad that I just found you! I would have loved to do the sheet skirt swap—oh well…next time. I got a little tear in my eye when I saw your title …my grandma had that sheet and it was my fav!

Thank God for nerdy little systems! You’ve got a lot to keep track of! I mailed my sheets off today too. -Mary
