TWiP: My Year of Mornings

Well hello there, 2018! I love the start of a new year and a new photo project, and this time I’m going with a theme of “My Year of Mornings.”

This is my TENTH iteration of Project 365! In the beginning it was 10% about documenting my days at home with the little people and 90% about improving my photography skills. If you were to go back and look at the photos I took in 2008, you would agree that my goal has been achieved – those were some terrible, terrible pictures back then, LOL!

In recent years, the little people have grown up and shied away from the camera, while my photography skills have gotten to a level with which I am comfortable. That’s not to say there is still not plenty to learn, of course. I continue to take these daily projects as an opportunity to figure things out, although much of it is not obvious just by looking at the images. For instance, ever since I got my new DSLR last October, and the book Understanding Color in Photography, I have been working on my ability to get the exposure correct in-camera, as opposed to tweaking it in Lightroom. This has been an eye-opening experience for me. I didn’t expect to learn much from the book, and yet it has completely changed the way I approach my camera settings! That’s just one example of many.

So these days, Project 365 is more of a 60/40 thing for me: 60% documenting my days, and 40% refining my skills. This is a welcome development, because you may have noticed I don’t have as much time to blog as I once did. The “microblogging” I do in the caption of a photo is the closest thing I have to a diary, and if there’s anything I have learned in the last decade, it’s that the moments I blog are the moments I remember most clearly.

I can’t give up this daily practice, if I want to remember these days of small crafty projects, working outside of the home, lazy weekends in bed with a cup of coffee, big crafty projects, life with teenagers, candlelight in the kitchen, game nights, British mysteries on TV, and so much more. ♥♥♥

Thanks for continuing to come along for the ride!

By the way, this year I have decided to give up Flickr. My presence there had become automated anyway: I posted my images through a Lightroom extension, and I never visited the site or participated in the community anymore. So my 365 images have moved to Instagram. If I had to pick a social media “happy place,” Instagram would be it ☺

So, what is This Week in Pictures?

It’s a roundup of the microblogging I’ve done on Instagram all week. This includes photos I shot for Project 365 and any other extra images I may have posted. The theme for my daily 2018 project is mornings: #myyearofmornings2018

  1. The cowl is nice and looks warm with all of the snow in your hair. Your roaring fire is wonderful. It was 9 degrees last night but not a single flake yet. Being a snow lover, I still have hopes for this winter.

    1. Thanks, Chloe 😊 Where are you from? So much of the country has had snow! (9 degrees, brrr! We’re at 15 right now, with today’s low expected to be -3). Happy New Year!

  2. We live in middle Tennessee. The snow has gone above and below us so far this year.
