Ten days

Ten days. That’s how long we were without power. And if not for the support of our families, who took us in for a few days at a time, I’d probably be really, really cranky right about now. It’s good to have sweet parents who want to help us. We are lucky, and we know it.

So, three days at home, three days with my family, another night back home, and three nights with Neil’s family. Two weeks without school (the boys are referring to it as a 16-day weekend). Trees stretched out across the lawn. Cooking meals in the fireplace. Recharging cell phones at town hall. Borrowing a neighbor’s wi-fi signal to get news. Snow. Gas rationing. Coffee. Game night. Taking pictures…

It’s been an adventure.

But today we are home, and the lights are on. And the phone is working. And the thermostat is back where it belongs. Oh, it is so nice to be home. Thank you, electric company crews from other states who came to our rescue (I saw Ohio, Michigan, and Mississippi). Thank you!

P.S. It’s going to take me a little while to get back into the swing of things around here, so please bear with me a little bit longer if you are waiting for a hook order – thanks!

  1. Yay! I’ll bet that central heat feels wonderful!

    1. Very much so!

  2. Glad you are getting back to normal! Hopefully the new storm isn’t hitting you to badly.

    1. We got some snow, but it’s already mostly melted. No new problems, thankfully 🙂

  3. YOWZA! Now that is a test of something in your makeup. Glad you’re on the other side!

    1. Me too! It’s nice to be in my own bed (lumpy as the mattress may be, LOL!)

  4. It’s an interesting time, to be without power. The Ozarks was hit hard by an ice storm in 2007 and we were without power for 12 days in a very cold icy January. So I can relate. You try to find ways to have fun with it all, but the reality is that your whole life is interrupted. The damage…oh the damage. Our aquarium froze, my houseplants died, every tree was shattered. But the worst part was the not knowing. When? When will we get power again? When will we be warm again? It’s amazing how much you miss your life when you don’t have it! So glad you’re back in the swing of things with minimal damage. What an adventure, eh? But surely one you’d rather have done without!

    1. Oh, yes, that’s a big part of it – the uncertainty of when your life will be back to normal. It makes it hard to move forward and get anything done! I spent so much time loafing around in other people’s houses last week. I felt so lazy!

  5. Welcome home and welcome back to your life! What a mess for everybody back there. I just read about a Long Island family who finally got power back only to have it go out again in the latest storm. They had power less than 24 hours. My heart goes out to all of you. And I really love the 16-day weekend. So funny! Clever boys!

    1. I saw a news report about those people. I don’t usually watch the news, but when you’re in other people’s houses…

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the 16 day weekend doesn’t become a 17 day weekend, but so far the schools are still without power!

  6. Great news. At least you were able to make the most of it, though sad to see your great tree down.

    1. Yeah, it’s a shame we have no big oaks left anymore. We’ve lost four of them in the last five years! That is my cue, I think, to plant the flowering trees I have been wanting.

  7. So glad life is finally returning to normal for you (or for what passes for normal if you are like me 😉 Had you and your family in my thoughts and prayers!

    1. Thanks! I appreciate your good thoughts and prayers 🙂

  8. Glad to hear you have it back. We were without it for a week after the ice storm in 2008 so I know how tough it is! Hope normal feels normal again soon.

    1. Thanks for the empathy 🙂 I’m hoping Monday will feel Monday-ish!

  9. Such good news to read you are all up and running. You are right ~ what an adventure. I am sure one your boys will be talking about with their kids one day 🙂 Take care and enjoy being home.

    1. Very possibly!

  10. I’m so glad to hear you got power back. Hopefully the kids will have school soon too.

HB teaches down here in the Freehold regional school district and the kids just went back today. No spring break this year and it looks like they’ll be in the classroom until nearly July!

    1. Mine just went back today. No word yet on how they are going to redistribute the days now. I really hope we don’t lose spring break. Going straight through from January to July would be the worst.

  11. Terrible. But thankfully you are all OK. We were without power for 4 hours due to heavy snow bring down trees onto power lines. That seemed bad enough. Mind you – it was well below freezing and we really did need some heat.

  12. […] month, hence the blue. (I really should have had that tree removed from our lawn months ago, after Sandy knocked it down, but I’ve been dragging my heels. For once my laziness has paid off, because it’s a […]
