I miss electricity

And phone. And internet…

Actually, I shouldn’t complain. I’ve been kept warm and well-fed by my parents for much of the last five days. And when the power is restored, I will still have a house to come home to. Not everyone can say that.

Neil has been in Toronto since Thursday, and will be coming home tonight. The boys and I spent the night at home last night, but it was exceptionally cold in the house, and so we have spent most of today elsewhere.

My laptop has remained mostly off, so I don’t have many pictures to show you, even though I have taken my fair share of them. My next few posts will probably just be scenes from the last week, as I get a chance to edit the photos and post them. The images here are from the day after the hurricane.

Thanks for the expressions of concern. I haven’t been able to respond, but I do appreciate them.

Last night, as I tried to fall asleep next to the fire, under two blankets, wearing a sweater and a hat for extra warmth, I thought about those who are in the same situation as we are, but don’t have a fireplace or family nearby. And today I made a small donation to the American Red Cross disaster fund. If you’re looking for something you can do to help, that would be a nice option.

Oh, and please don’t forget to vote. If you’re undecided, or don’t have a strong opinion one way or another, then please just vote for Obama and consider it a personal favor for me.

Just kidding.

Sort of. 😉

Be back when I can.

  1. I’ve thought it for a long time… But after this last post I just have to say it… I LOVE THIS GIRL! ( I mean you Lisa). Keep it up! Thanks for sharing your stories and teaching me such nice stuff! love from Spain!

  2. Glad to hear an update from you, you’ve all been on my mind.

  3. I’m so glad you are all safe! Will keep you and your family in my prayers. xxx

  4. Oh, it makes me sad to see all of your trees uprooted. 🙁 I hope the power comes back on soon, enjoy snuggling with your boys until then! Also, I love your closing sentiment. 🙂

  5. Happy, that u are ok:)

  6. I miss electricity too. 🙁

  7. So sad.
Dear Tree, he is felt in the garden and not on your pretty house.
My best wishes for you and every one who needs help.

    Read you.
    Julie

  8. Oh, Lisa. I understand. It’s been a long week for you all and I hope you get power restored soon. I felt really sad looking at those giant trees lying on the ground (but better there than on your house). I’ll be voting in about an hour (or beginning the stand on line) and it will definitely be for Obama. I’m doing it as a favor to our whole country. The thought of the other guys scares the bejeesus out of me!

  9. Glad you are staying warm – having family around makes a difference. Although in the UK if I were an American I would vote for Obama – disastrous if his opponent gets in I feel. Are these storms happening more often – my girls were asking me: it feels like it. Always sad to see the trees down. Here we are struggling with the Ash tree blight.

  10. I’m so sorry to hear you still don’t have power 🙁 Hopefully it’s restored to your area soon. I know it’s been a mess recently. I’m thinking of you and your family.

I’m off to the polls now. If I were one to disclose who I’m voting for I think you’d be happy with what I had to say 😉

  11. The basic difference between brazilians and americans is that the climate up in the US is so harsh that you guys have to be “tough” while we are “soft”, almost frivolous… I have the pleasure of learning a little about “real hard life” and how to get the best of it when I get in touch with people like you.

Hope you, and all americans facing the consequences of Sandy’s violence, have a full and fast recovery.

Come back when you can, we’ll be rignt here.

  12. […] the trees that have potential to damage the house (or us) fell victim to previous storms (one, two, three) or just randomly fell on their own (four, […]
