Plaid Shawl Pin Tutorial + giveaway winner

It’s time for another Polka Dot Download! How about a little something in clay this time?  Through the Plaid Shawl Pin Tutorial, you will learn how to make a deceptively simple plaid-patterned cane and then use it in the construction of a shawl pin like this one.  (Be sure to have a look here, if you missed last week’s sneak peek.)

The technique used to make this cane is one that I first began playing with four or five years ago now.  If you’ve ever made an extruded “retro” cane, you are familiar with the idea that a single extrusion, when cut and reassembled, can produce a complex multi-colored face.  This is because the colors visible in any cross-section of the extrusion change throughout the length of it.  I got to thinking about how this same reasoning could be applied to a Skinner blend, which led me to this triangle pattern.  Plaid is just a slightly more complicated version of those triangles.

Start with three colors, and end up with a beautiful plaid design that includes those three colors and all of the hues in between.

You can use the link below to purchase the tutorial at any time.

Or, wander over to the downloads page where for a limited time, it will be Freebie of the Week. If it is FotW, then go ahead and download it there for free.  Enjoy!

Now, as promised, with the help of my 7-year-old assistant, I have chosen a random winner to take home the shawl pin that is featured in the tutorial.

Drumroll please…

And the winner is: Linda Meziere!  Linda, please email me your snail mail address, and I’ll get your shawl pin in the mail to you this week.  Congratulations!

Thanks, everyone, for playing along – have a wonderful week!  (If my week goes according to plan, I’ll have some more shawl pins up in the shop soon for you to choose from, if you aren’t up for making them yourself…)
