Handful of Randomness

Posted By Lisa On July 21, 2009 @ 9:15 am In chit chat | 7 Comments

It’s raining. Pretty hard.  What a great morning to sit by an open window with a quilt on your lap, eating the last of the blueberry pound cake, and sipping vanilla coffee.  I’ll have to imagine that coffee part, since we’re all out of milk and I just can’t bring myself to drink it black.  The rest of the scenario fits, though.

I know it’s been several days since my last post, but I’ve had a hard time figuring out what to put here lately.  I’ve been waiting for One Big Topic to post about, but there just hasn’t been one.  My days have been filled with lots of little random topics lately.  So, maybe that’s where I should be going with this.  Randomness.

Here are a handful of things I’ve been doing and liking lately:

A Month of Hands: 18/31 :: Going on a Date

Date Night.  The kids got a sleepover with Grandma, and we got to go out and do something completely different than the usual dinner and a movie.  (I say that as if dinner and a movie are our usual!  They’re not – we rarely go out.)

There is an old historic railroad less than an hour from here, that goes between the towns of Ringoes and Flemington.  I’ve written about it before.  During the summer they run what they call the Saturday Night Special, which takes you from Ringoes (where there’s not much to do but snap pictures of old trains) through some lovely countryside to Flemington, where they leave you there for two hours to eat, shop & walk around.  Then, as it’s getting dark, you board the old train back to Ringoes.

It was such a unique way to spend some time together.  We got some good Mexican food in Flemington, and found an unbelievable sale that neither one of us could resist at one of the outlets.  If you’re local, I recommend it.  There are two more dates that they are offering it.

A Month of Hands: 17/31 :: Auditioning Buttons

Aside from dating my husband, I’ve been thinking about what many of you said on my post about the beach bag, and I really love the idea to use buttons to offset the patchwork issues.  I haven’t decided which buttons I’m going to use yet, but I am enjoying auditioning the ones I have.

A Month of Hands: 19/31 :: Deciding

Let’s see, we’ve also been picking berries – the wineberries are in!  That has meant a double batch of Wineberry Crisp (one for us, one to share with Neil’s parents as they kept an eye on our kids Saturday night) and today I will try my hand at Wineberry Jam.  Wish me luck.  Last time I tried that, I ended up with little wineberry-flavored jar-shaped rocks.  That was at least three years ago, and I know a thing or two more about pectin now, thankfully.

A Month of Hands: 20/31 :: Making Supper

This has been the summer of the homemade bread, which I hope does not have the same effect on my waistline as the summer of the elastic-waist skirt did in 2007.  It’s not looking good, though…  Yesterday it was Scandinavian Light Rye, which makes a mighty fine BLT sandwich.  Minus the T.  There is not a single tomato-eater in our household.  Can you believe that?

As much as I am enjoying my little spot by the window, listening to the rain pour down, I really need to get myself into the shower and start my day for real.  There’s jam to be made, and oh! a new book is in stock.  Must get that on it’s way, too!
