More stripey goodness

I lulled myself to sleep last night, thinking about how best to get the stripey look I started to experiment with yesterday. I decided the best way to get narrow stripes would be to start with narrow stripes.

Almost. I got the soft stripes I wanted, but I decided to go back on what I said yesterday and introduce more contrast.

Now that was more like it. I managed to make the resulting strip about half as wide as it was when I started (two inches as opposed to four) by pressing in on the sides before each pass through the pasta machine. I think I can afford to go even skinnier next time, but this was good enough for now.

I gave up on the idea of turning it into a cane (for now) because stacking the stripes ended up in an ikat-style look. It wasn’t a bad pattern, but not what I was going for.

So, I used the blend to try a new earring design that had popped into my head last week. I need to refine my technique, and get myself the proper materials, but this method definitely has promise.

And I also made a tile pendant, similar to those I usually make, but instead of hanging it from a jump ring, I drilled the hole through the tile and strung it directly on the cord.

I’m liking this stripey thing. I just need to try it in my favorite colors (as opposed to what was lying around) and attempt to condense the stripes further. The thinner the better.

You know what I like about this technique? I like the path it has taken from spark of inspiration, through experimentation, and into something that doesn’t resemble its origins much at all. That’s my favorite kind of inspiration.

  1. Good stuff. I normally don’t like pink and green…especially the preppy colors you used…but DANG woman, that is some fine necklace you got there.

  2. I like the style of your earrings and the drilled-through-pendant very much. Your skinner blend experiments are interesting and fun to see.

  3. I can’t wait to see how much further you take this. I love how the pendant and earrings turned out.

  4. I LOVE those earrings and pendant!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE them!

  5. Wonderful experimentation, the pendant sits great and looks fab!

  6. The pieces turned out really cool. I love all the variations you’ve made. I don’t do any clay arts & I just love looking at what clay artists create. It’s amazing what the finished look is when you put different combinations together. Looking forward to what else you come up with.

    Take care
